2024-2026 NEWLY ELECTED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Russell Lum, President

Russell holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Hastings College of Law and is theVice President and Deputy Legal Division Manager at the Bank of Hawaii. Previously, he has held prominent positions at notable financial institutions including Central Pacific Bank, City Bank and Bank of America. He is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association and has also served as a board member for the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section since 2008.

Kirk Horiuchi, Vice President

Kirk has played tennis almost all his life, participating in USTA sanctioned junior tournaments since the age of 9, playing high school tennis on the Big Island and USTA leagues since he was in college at UH Manoa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance. He also has his MBA from UC Berkeley and is a licensed real estate broker and a former CPA. Kirk works at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation where he is the senior director of asset management – Hawaii real estate.

Donna Ede, Secretary

Donna is a retired teacher and health education specialist with more than forty years of experience instructing at both private and public schools. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master's in Education degrees from Pacific University in Oregon. Outside of her professional achievements, Donna has been actively involved in various sports and education-related organizations, including the Hawaii After School Alliance and the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section's Youth Tennis Committee.

Shari Fujita, Treasurer

Shari is a Certified Public Accountant with an extensive background in financial management in the hospitality industry. She is currently employed as Controller at Pulama Lanai in downtown Honolulu. Shari spent 3 years at Aqua-Aston Hospitality as their Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Previously, she worked for the Outrigger Enterprises Group as the Vice President of Accounting. Shari earned her Bachelor's degree in Finance from Indiana University and has served on the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section's Board of Directors since 2013.

Walter Wong, Section Delegate

Walter is a retired Certified Public Accountant with over thirty years of financial management experience at the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Hawaii. He has a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Walter has generously dedicated his time to the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section by serving on the Board of Directors since 1999, holding previous positions as Treasurer, Section Delegate, Vice President and President.

Bruce Nagel, Director at Large

Bruce has been playing and competing in tennis for 50+ years with over 45 years teaching adults and children in group and private lessons. He held the position of Kailua Racquet Club Director of Tennis from 1990 - 2020 and was Kailua Racquet Club General Manager from 1999 – 2020. Bruce is a member of USPTA, USTA, CMAA Bruces education includes: Bachelor’s Degree in business administration and University of Iowa with specialties in statistical analysis and marketing

Michael Yani, Director at Large

Michael is a former professional tennis player with a career-high ATP world singles ranking of 143. He has played in all four Grand Slam tournaments multiple times during his ten-year tennis career. Today, he is a Corporate Real Estate Asset Manager at the Bank of Hawaii and manages 400-thousand square feet of office and retail space. Michael holds a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Duke University

Dave Andrews, Director at Large

Dave is a retired Lt. Colonel for Hawaii Air National Guard. Dave is currently an airline pilot Captain at Hawaiian Airlines. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from United States Naval Academy in 1982 and earned his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University in 1988. Dave has an extensive tennis resume, he was a former Assistant NCAA Div. 1 coach at USNA and University of West Florida. While at USNA, he Captained and led the team at #1 singles. He has received Hall of Fame awards at the 1982 United States Naval Academy Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2017 was inducted into the USTA HPS Hall of Fame.

Jamie Madriaga, Director at Large

Jamie is a Partner at a civil litigation law firm in downtown Honolulu who has been selected to the Hawaii Super Lawyers® Rising Stars list every year since 2017. She currently serves as a Vice-Chair for the American Bar Association Admiralty and Maritime Law Committee and was selected to be a Lawyer Delegate to the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii Conference. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and her Juris Doctor degree from Case Western Reserve University. In her spare time, Jamie enjoys playing tennis at the Oahu Club. 

Connor Hyde , Director at Large

Connor is a New Hampshire tennis state champion and #1 junior player. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Business from the University of Redlands, where he played four years of tennis. He spent three years as a tennis professional at Chatham Bars Inn Resort in Cape Cod prior to receiving his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Franklin Pierce University. Over the past 6 years he has held numerous physical therapy positions across the island and now works out of his company, Hyde Physical Therapy & Wellness.

Derek Brow, Director at Large

Derek is an attorney-advisor for the U.S. military at Marine Corps Base Hawai‘i. He advocates for clients in education law cases, and also provides legal assistance services in family law, immigration law, consumer finance matters, and wills & estate planning. Derek is also a Captain and Judge Advocate in the United States Army Reserve Component, currently assigned to Fort Shafter, Hawai‘i. He earned a Juris Doctorate in Law from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and a Master’s degree in Chinese Civil and Commercial Law from the Renmin University of China. Derek has competed in several tennis tournaments and leagues in Hawai‘i, and has also worked as a tennis instructor at the Nick Bolletierri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Rick Fried, Director at Large

L. Richard Fried, Jr. settled in Hawaii in 1968 after navigating in the war in Vietnam.

He has had over four decades in a practice that specializes in medical malpractice but includes personal injury, product liability and aviation law, Fried is an enthusiastic tennis player, calling himself a "decent old man's player." He jokes that he "peaked when he was 12," while in fact he has ranked #1 in Hawaii in his age group for the last 20 years straight and in August 2019 was one of two U.S. players to represent the U.S. in a match against Great Britain. He also enjoys skiing as a refreshing break from the warm weather in Hawaii. He is also active on the boards of the Hawaii Theatre Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, Waialae Country Club (Tennis Chair), is the Board Chair of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, and Co-Director of the Innocence Project, which attempts to exonerate those wrongfully convicted and imprisoned

Hendrik Bode, Director at Large

Hendrik is an accomplished Head Coach with 14 years of leadership experience and a total of 22 years in coaching, specializing in elite-level college teams and athletes. He is a espected leader within college tennis and the local community through continuous devotion to the game and growth of tennis and excels in fostering trustworthy relationships with student-athletes, ensuring their development as athletes as well as respectful community members. Hendrik promotes a culture of athletic and academic excellence built around trust, honesty, and collaboration.

Cathy Hall, Maui

Cathy is a partner at Carlsmith Ball LLP and works in the firm's Maui office. Her practice focuses on real property litigation, probate and trust litigation, and business litigation matters, as well as real property and land use transactional matters. She was selected by attorney peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2024 for Real Estate Law, Commercial Litigation, and Litigation - Real Estate and was previously selected for Ones to Watch for Land Use and Zoning Law (2022), and Litigation - Real Estate (2022 and 2021). Cathy was also named to the 2023 Hawaii Super Lawyers Rising Stars list for General Litigation. She is the current President of the Maui Community Tennis Organization.


Christine Watanabe, Kauai

is passionate about tennis having found the sport later in life.  After returning to Kaua`i, her goal is to get more participation in tennis on the island.  Last Labor Day she ran the first tournament on Kaua`i since COVID, and plans on working with fellow Kaua`i tennis enthusiasts to plan more tennis tournaments and activities on Kaua`i.  She has played in USTA leagues since 2008 and was able to represent Hawaii in the NTRP tournament in 2019.

Dave Okamura, East Hawaii

Dave is the Director of Engineering at Hawaiian Electric since 1993. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and a MBA from the University of Hawaii

Dave is the newly elected Chair of the East Hawaii Community Tennis Organization. He is an active volunteer for the East Hawaii Community Tennis Organization in many aspects such as: LLC, board member, DLC chair, ALC member and Tournament Director. He has planned several court bleaching and line painting projects and purchases and maintains rollers.

Community Tennis Organization Delegates


Kris Oyama, Maui

Kris is a retired fire captain for the County of Maui. She became involved in tennis as a teenager, helping in the construction of a tennis court at her parents’ home. She played USTA league tennis since 1993 and has been involved in the Maui Community Tennis Organization as treasurer and delegate. Kris enjoys competing in tennis at the World Pllice and Fire Games, and playing in mixed leagues with her grandson.


Christine Watanabe, Kauai

Nancy Kelly, East Hawaii

Nancy retired from the County of Hawaii in 2018 as the Budget Administrator.  She has been involved in league tennis in East Hawaii for over 25 years and has been on the local board since 2006.  She is currently the chair of the East Hawaii Community Tennis Organization.
