Maui Junior Tennis Grant Program

PURPOSE

To provide financial assistance to the Maui tennis community and specifically to provide financial assistance to Maui junior tennis players to travel to tennis tournaments on other islands and the mainland.

The grant is limited to $500 per junior and must be used for travel expenses to approved tennis tournaments.

ELIGIBILITY

To qualify an applicant must:

 Be a current resident of Maui

 Be age 18 or younger

 Demonstrate financial need

SELECTION CRITERIA

1. Financial need of applicant

2. Other special circumstances will be considered but are not required to be demonstrated

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

1. A completed Maui Junior Tennis Grant application form

2. W-2 Form or Federal Tax Return

APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Complete the Maui Junior Tennis Grant application form, which must be signed by a parent/guardian

RECIPIENTS RESPONSIBILITY

All grant recipients are:

 Required to attend and participate in the tennis tournament for which the grant is awarded. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the loss of the grant and/or eligibility for future grants

 Required to submit receipts for the travel expenses

 After attending and participating in the tournament, required to submit a 1 page summary of how the grant benefited the recipient to mcto@gmail.com

 Expected to, if asked, participate in Maui volunteer activities to help promote tennis

Job Opening: Part-Time: Junior Tennis Coordinator 

19 hours or less per week. Knowledge of tennis and tennis playing experience required. Must be well organized and have strong communication and computer skills.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assist the Director of Junior Tennis with the administration and promotion of the USTA Junior League and Competition programs on Oahu

Essential Duties

• Plan, manage, and perform all administrative tasks necessary for the operation of the USTA Junior League and Competition programs

• Be knowledgeable about the USTA National, Sectional and Area Junior League and Competition Regulations

• Communicate with coaches, parents, and players on a regular basis via email and telephone

• Assist with the organization and administration of any Sectional Championships

• Serve as a Tournament Director for junior tournaments on Oahu

• Assist with other office and team events as needed

Work Hours

• 19 hours or less a week

• Weekend hours required

Skills and Qualifications

• Outstanding organizational and administrative skills

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Strong customer service skills

• Proficient in the use of Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and web browser products

• Preferred to have a strong tennis background and understanding of the sport

• Preferred knowledge of the USTA Junior League and Competition Regulations

Education and Experience

• High school degree required, college degree preferred

USTA National L2 Junior Tournament/results

Hawaii’s highest level Junior Tournament (L2) took place October 7-9 at The Jarand M.Y. Iwase Tennis Complex at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP). Hawaii has won the bid and run this tournament successfully for 10+ consecutive years.

The National L2 Tournament selection process for this level is based on ranking and many of the players fly from the mainland to enter!

USTA HAWAII LEVEL 2 NATIONAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS & PHOTOS

LOW NUMBER OF JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS

The number of junior tournaments has been down since the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The reason for the decrease is due to schools, private clubs, and tennis organizations having restricted access to students and members only.  Many of them are still not yet ready to host any junior tournaments.  For a while, USTA was the only organization hosting junior programs and tournaments. USTA has been hosting most of the junior tournaments at The Jarand M. Y. Iwase Tennis Complex at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP).  Each event is required to go through the permit approval process. In June, CORP started its court resurfacing project and encountered court damage issues after the pickle ball event. All permit processes for CORP are on hold until further notice. Therefore, all USTA hosted junior tournaments are also postponed.  During this time, USTA will host flex tournaments to provide some competition.  Slowly, we are seeing tournament directors in Hilo, Kona, and Oahu begin to host Level 6 and color ball events.  Some tournament directors have plans to start hosting junior tournaments in the fall this year. We hope to see a big increase in the number of junior tournaments by 2023.

JTT & JTTK LEAGUES

Sportsmanship Policy & Code of Conduct

The Section Board recently approved and adopted the USTA Sportsmanship Policy and the Code of Conduct. Effective immediately, all participants, including parents/guardian, athletes, and coaches/managers will be required to sign the Code of Conduct form when registering for USTA Hawaii junior tournaments and leagues. USTA National Junior Tournament Structure

·   The new structure will utilize seven levels of events, ranging from Level 7 (Intermediate) to Level 1 (National Championships) and a universal ranking system that will distribute points consistently across the country.  

·   This nationwide system will provide consistent tournament levels and standardized tournament operations for all events—regardless of location—replacing a current system that is greatly dependent upon the region.  

·   The new system will allow players to more easily compete across sections, as the levels will be standardized with an increased number of open events, providing even more playing opportunities for junior players.

·   In addition, there will be a series of non-ranking events, which will focus on age-appropriate competition, development, and fun.

PlayTracker for 10u Players

On January 1, 2021, USTA Youth Progression transitioned to USTA.com within your profile, and with that comes an exciting new look.

Ball Color & Age Requirements

Players must be at least 5 years old to play in a USTA competitive program, and will graduate from the Net Generation PlayTracker at the age of 11, on the first day of their birthday month. 

·         Players aged 5-7 years old are recommended to play in red ball programs.

·         Players aged 7-9 years old are recommended to play in orange ball programs.

·         Players aged 9-11 years old are recommended to play in green ball programs. 

Players under the age of 9 will be required to pass an assessment by their primary Net Generation coach in order to play in green ball programs. (more details below)

All players in green ball will be required to meet 1500 points on the Net Generation PlayTracker in order to play in yellow ball events. 

Eligible Play Opportunities

Players will receive points from red, orange and green ball USTA Team Challenges, USTA Junior Team Tennis, and USTA Junior Circuit programs.

·         USTA Team Challenge - Low pressure introduction to competition (1-2 hours)

·         USTA Junior Team Tennis - Season of local team-based match play (4-8 weeks)

·         USTA Junior Circuit - Series of non-elimination tournaments (2-4 hours)
